Active since the 1980s, Lubomyr Melnyk is a classical pianist who has created a completely new language for the piano, called ‘Continuous Music’. It is a totally new approach, where complex layered notes give rise to an amazing new sound for the piano – where you can hear a whole orchestra or even sounds of nature – using the resonance pedal to create echo and reverberation, creating free-flowing cascades of notes in hypnotic sound waves. Melnyk composes as he plays, at the piano, feeling the lines and individual rhythmic cells bubbling, undulating and gradually expanding into vast interconnected structures. Thanks to the ambient nature of his music, combined with his extraordinary piano technique, Continuous Music has attracted a steadily growing audience.
