Hassan Khan is an artist, musician, and writer living in Cairo and Berlin.
In his practice he often develops musical works, as for Composition for a Public Park : a large-scale, multi-lingual musical artwork, featuring multi-channel music and spoken narrative which lead him to the Silver Lion at the 2017 Venice Art Biennale.
SUPERSTRUCTURE EP, Khan’s first release with The Vinyl Factory, is comprised of two long powerful tracks produced out of the recording sessions of his critically acclaimed piece Jewel (2010). In the introspective but dynamic a short story based on a distant memory , delicate electronica, vertiginous strings and modulated percussions weave together a mesmerizing, shimmering, constantly shifting landscape of the mind. While SUPERSTRUCTURE (the ammunition of the nation)builds up and breaks down a brutal relentless beat using a battery of programmed percussive instruments, a vocal chorus, heavily distorted guitars and droned out Mizmars to shake your body in deeply physical ways. Both takes are from a live recording of Khan’s sold out 2012 Louvre Concert in Paris.
Hassan Khan is now also presenting a unique live version of his musical installation The Infinite Hip-Hop Song , now on show at Center Pompidou. The Infinite Hip Hop Songis derived from a vast database of original content produced by the artist: beats, melodies, bass lines and studio recordings with eleven rappers of different ages, profiles and genders, singing the words of ten songs. This content is assembled in an endless flow by an algorithm generator. Reprising this in a live concert in the Grande Salle of the Center Pompidou, Hassan Khan establishes a dialogue with its content and reverses the roles. Replacing the algorithm generator, the artist forms and elaborates this material on stage in a unique musical experience, using a specifically developed program and interface.
